The INTP

Temperament: Rational.

INTP

INTP s are naturally calm, abstract, logic and exploring individuals. They have a natural drive to accumulate knowledge and seek to unveil what is not yet understood. Because of their objective reasoning skills and strong capacity to understand abstract models and theories, they are often drawn to careers in engineering, whether this has to do with mathematical concepts, computer programming or the planning of buildings, structures or machinery. While the ENTP is the natural inventor, the INTP is naturally gifted at redesigning those inventions for ultimate effect. The INTP is the poster child for our ideal of the engineer, without whom reason, technology and ingenuity would vanish from society.

Communication Style

INTP s do their best work when working by themselves and they use their time talking to others to come up with creative ideas and wonder about things. In conversation they use a highly developed language that makes use of exact definitions and careful sentence building to express their contributions as accurately as possible. For this purpose, INTP s even like to come up with their own words and definitions or abbreviations that may then be used to communicate an idea with ever higher precision. Because they place so much value on the precision of their statements, they have a keen ability to spot inconsistencies or wrongly used words in the speech of others, even if those appear over long periods of time. Because other types don’t usually have as highly developed language skills as the INTP , this type may experience difficulties explaining their highly creative and inventive ideas which are sometimes expressed in ways too technical or intellectual.

Learning Style

INTP s have a good capacity for studies and excel particularly in the fields of logic, physics and computer sciences. Because of their intuitive qualities they are more interested in what could be than what is and thus are difficult to motivate for studies that are not aligned with their natural interests. As with the ISTP, the key to INTP motivation is to show how material relates to their interests and how it can help them to get better at it. Of course this means that you need to know what the INTP s interests are. If they see the benefit in the subject material they often put in long hours to perfect their art and are thus capable of learning almost anything.

What goes on in your head

INTP s are very serious when it comes to logic, which they believe to be the only true value and objective measure of things. This is why many INTP s have a fascination for the science fiction genre, putting them in awe of what humans will be capable of doing in the future. Not so much as dreamers, but because of their pure understanding of the sciences, they know that so many things beneficial to mankind would be possible already and they don’t quite understand human’s hesitation in its implementation nor their apparent obsession with material goods, excessive luxuries or mass consumption. Much rather, they see the life experience as the search for and accumulation of knowledge which puts them somewhat at odds with the rest of the population, who seemingly enjoying mundane tasks in a quest for ultimate ignorance and apparent self destruction.

In Relationships

INTP s are not known for being the masters of romance. This however might be a false representation of their type, because they simply have a different view of what is a romantic act. Instead of the common rose on valentines day or chocolates on a special occasion, they’d rather come up with a more unique way of expressing their affection as exemplified by Harold’s poem in Harold and Kumar and the lonely number three. They are not naturally in tune with their feeling side and can get exhausted easily when confronted with emotional arguments. On the other hand, INTP s are distinctly comfortable people to live with and provide as much personal space as one could ask for. INTP s are likely to bond most successfully with the energetic ENFJ who can help the INTP communicate their ideas and designs to the outside world.

Growing up

Growing up INTP s spend a lot of time with their hobbies and self interests which often differ from those of the people around them. Computer games, programming, science fiction novels, Comic Con, Internet adventures and so forth, all are likely to capture the young INTP s interest. They will often find it more rewarding to explore these topics with like minded friends than participating in the common activities of others. With their natural absorption of knowledge they also tend to perform better at school than the other kids at young and older ages. They are also not likely to develop difficulties with their parents or teachers, as long as they’re allowed to follow their own interests and are not forced to commit to activities that they disapprove. INTP s are highly intelligent types who often outsmart their parents and teachers at an early age and they have a very high potential in the academic fields. For this reason they often prefer to be left alone and follow their own pursuits rather than having to put up with the trivialities intended for ordinary folk.

How others should deal with this type

When dealing with an INTP , it is important to remember this type’s need for independence and difficulties in dealing with emotional content. The INTP is so fiercely scientific that dealing with the feeling side of things can be extremely draining for them, so you shouldn't be surprised if an INTP simply leaves a conversation that has drifted off the course of reason. On the other hand, because of their extraverted feeling function, they do like the occasional convening with friends if it is in a happy and explorative environment. So when dealing with emotional issues it is important to give the INTP a lot of time to process your requests and if possible presenting them in a logical framework. For example, don't simply say that the INTP is making you sad, but add why they are making you sad and how this affects your life. If the INTP is given enough space and independence, they are much more likely to become attentive of your needs and be a highly beneficial factor in your life.

How you should deal with others

As an INTP you should keep in mind that most people don't have the same understanding of life as you nor the same appreciation for knowledge. You should try to understand that emotional arguments are arguments nonetheless and should not be discredited for a lack of reason. If you can accept that feelings are a valid fact of life, you can include them as factual input to your reasoning, which will give you a more emphatic reception with others. Also, to make your ideas more accessible to others, you can try to simplify your language and use practical examples rather than theoretical models and explanations. Making your thoughts more understandable will make you more effective and give your work greater impact on your surrounding.
